7 Days Primate & Big 5 Safari

7 Days Primate & Big 5 Safari (Rwanda’s Forests & Savannah Showdown)

One week. Two wildly different worlds. Forest whispers and lion roars—all in one safari.

Overview

This 7-day safari is built for people who want both the wild whisper and the wild roar. You’ll dive into Rwanda’s thick mountain rainforests to track gorillas, golden monkeys, and chimpanzees, then swing east to the golden savannah of Akagera for Big 5 game drives and sunset boat cruises.

It’s two safaris in one—quiet forest connection, followed by open-plains adrenaline. If you’ve never been to Africa, this is your full immersion, with just the right balance of awe and ease.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 – Kigali City Tour & Into the Forest

Upon your arrival in Kigali, you shall be picked by your Friendly Gorillas safari guide who makes you feel instantly at ease. No stiff introductions—just good conversation, air conditioning, and maybe a banana from a roadside stall if you’re peckish.

You’ll explore Kigali’s clean streets, art spaces, and the powerful Genocide Memorial before heading southwest to Nyungwe Forest. The road twists through green hills and tea fields, and you’ll arrive at your forest lodge by evening—tucked between tall trees with just the right amount of quiet.

Day 2 – Chimpanzees in the Mist & the Forest from Above

The chimps don’t do schedules, so you’ll be up early—headlamp ready, boots laced. You’ll follow your guide into Nyungwe Forest, tracking their wild calls until you’re face-to-face with a troop that knows no personal space. They shriek, swing, and sometimes just sit and stare. It’s fast, raw, and funny.

After lunch, you take the canopy walk: 70 meters above the forest floor, held up by a swaying bridge and your sense of adventure. The view stretches forever. Birds swoop beneath your feet. Your knees wobble. You’ll love it.

Day 3 – The Road to Volcanoes National Park

You drive north today—through Rwanda’s rolling highlands, passing villages where kids wave like you’re a celebrity. You’ll stop for fruit, stretch your legs, and soak up the endless green.

The Virunga volcanoes start peeking out by afternoon, rising in mist and mystery. Your lodge near Volcanoes National Park welcomes you with warmth, woodsmoke, and views that demand silence. Tomorrow, you meet the gorillas.

Day 4 – Gorilla Trekking: The Quiet Stare That Stays With You

Early morning starts with a briefing, but the real experience begins on foot after a briefing from the ranger guide. You are later grouped into 8 and immediately depart for the hike into the jungles. You hike through farms, muddy trails, and thick bamboo. Then—there they are.

A family of mountain gorillas, lounging like it’s a Sunday picnic. A silverback scratches his chest. A baby rolls down a vine. One locks eyes with you—and in that instant, the world goes quiet.
You don’t speak. You just feel. That one hour will stay in your bones long after you’ve flown home.

Day 5 – Golden Monkeys & the Shift to Savannah

The golden monkeys are forest other primates besides the gorillas. They zip through trees, pose for selfies (badly), and play tag in the treetops. It’s a lighter trek, filled with laughter and lots of “Did you see that?!”

After the trek, you head east—trading mountain mist for savannah sun. You arrive at Akagera National Park by evening, where the landscape is wide and golden and dotted with silhouettes that might be antelopes… or lions. Depends how good your eyesight is.

Day 6 – The Big 5 Chase: Lions, Elephants & Unexpected Wonders

Wake up early. Game drive day. Your guide knows the park like it’s his backyard. You drive past giraffes nibbling acacias, elephants blocking the road like they own it (they do), and maybe a lion pride catching the last bit of morning shade.

You stop for a bush breakfast—coffee with zebras in the background—and keep going. Akagera holds all the drama of a classic African safari, minus the crowds. It’s raw, real, and deeply peaceful.

Day 7 – Boat Safari & Return to Kigali

Before you leave, there’s one last adventure—a boat safari on Lake Ihema. You drift past hippos bobbing like oversized marshmallows and crocodiles pretending to be logs. Kingfishers dive. The sun warms your back. It’s slow, and just right.

After the cruise, you head back to Kigali. One last scenic drive. One last look at Rwanda’s hills. You’re dropped off for your departure—suitcase heavier, heart fuller.
